Ten Commandments (4)

The Ten Commandments (4)

The fourth commandment is “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy” (Exod. 20:8). This commandment is peculiar to the Old Testament. With the death of Christ, the Old Testament era ended (Heb. 9:15-17; Col. 2:13-17). All of the other of the Ten Commandments are repeated as binding in the New Testament, but the observance of the Sabbath is not. It was replaced by the church worshiping on the first day of the week (Sunday), whereas ancient and modern Judaism worship on Saturday.

The church assembles on the first day of the week (Acts 20:7; 1 Cor. 16:1-2), a day sometimes referred to as the Lord’s day (Rev. 1:10).

We are living in a time when more and more people are choosing not to be affiliated with the Lord’s church. This Old Testament commandment reminds us that God expects His people to assemble to worship Him (see also Heb. 10:24-25). Christians honor the Lord’s commandments to assemble with other saints on the Lord’s day to offer their worship to God.

From the Old Testament commandment, one learns that a day for corporate worship is good for mankind. It is a day when we direct our minds toward spiritual things. We stop to remember what the God who created the heavens and earth (Exod. 31:17) has done to provide for us (food, jobs, etc.). It also is a time to remember what He has done for us in the sending of His Son to die for mankind’s sins, when saints assemble to partake of the Lord’s supper (1 Cor. 11:23-34). It is a time when our spirits are recharged by assembling with other dedicated saints to worship the Lord. The Decatur Township Church of Christ would like to invite you to join us each Lord’s day in offering our homage to the Lord.
