A Society That Doesn't Care for its Children

A Society That Doesn’t Care for Its Children

Mike Willis

On October 3, 2022, a news article on Fox News (online) appeared about the bloody weekend of October 1-2 in the city of Chicago. The first two paragraphs of the article are reproduced as follows:

Chicago saw another bloody weekend, with 34 people shot, including a 3-year-old boy fatally shot in an officer-involved shooting that left a suspect dead.

"We've seen children shot across this city in ridiculous numbers," Chicago Police Deputy Chief Larry Snelling said, according to WLS. "When did we become a society where we stop caring about the children?” (https://www.foxnews.com/us/chicago-rocked-bloody-weekend-dozens-shot-including-one-child-fatally).

I would like to give my opinion as one man’s answer to the question. It happened on January 22, 1973 when the Supreme Court decided 7-2 to allow mothers to abort their unborn babies. From that moment forward, America began looking on their children as disposable. From 1973-2020, 63,459,781 babies were aborted. That averages out to 3576 per day! For the year 2021, the number of children 0-17 years old who died in the United States by gun violence was 1248 (https://www.gunviolencearchive.org/), versus 629,898 abortions for the year 2019 (latest statistics available to me). The number 1248/628,898 is a little less than two-tenths of 1% of those killed by abortions (the numbers are rounded to the decimal point). Yet, when one child is killed by gun violence, it is front page news. But when 1725 babies die legally in abortion clinics every day, it is celebrated as a woman’s right to choose!

So, I suggest the answer to the question, “When did we become a society where we stop caring about the children?” is January 22, 1973!
