Ten Commandments Summary

Ten Commandments Summary

Mike Willis

We have gone over each of the Ten Commandments. In this final article, I want to impress how much of the American judicial system is rooted in the Mosaical Law. There are laws against murder, stealing, perjury, as well as many other legal concepts (liability, negligence, etc.) which have their roots in the Law of Moses.

When Jesus died on the cross, He made an end of the Law of Moses. Paul described the end of the Mosaical ordinances saying, “And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him” (Col. 2:13-15).

His conclusion based on Jesus nailing the Law to the cross is this: “Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ” (Col. 2:16-17). The reason that the Lord’s church does not have animal sacrifices, a Levitical priesthood, observe the yearly feasts (Passover, Pentecost or Tabernacles) or keep the Sabbath (Saturday) is because that Old Testament law is no longer binding on mankind.
