Why Does My Family Need The Bible? (4)

By Greg King

“Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear” (Isa. 59:1-2).

My family needs the Bible to come to understand sin. Only in the Bible can they come to know sin for what it really is and develop a proper attitude toward it. The world teaches us to laugh at sin. The world ridicules sin as an old-fashioned notion. The world glamorizes sin and teaches us to grab all the gusto we can while selfishly serving self. We need to grow to hate sin, despise evil and flee from it. We can only learn it in the Bible. “Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way”(Psa. 119:104). We should come to see sin as a dishonor to God and self (Rom. 1). We need to be able to see the consequences of sin and the death, pain, and misery in this life and even worse in the life to come. My family needs to learn about sin. In Romans 6:23 we learn that the wages of sin is death. This death is what  Isaiah is speaking of in chapter 59:1-2. It is a separation from God. Even though we are guilty there is hope.

Jesus promises to provide forgiveness and eternal salvation to all who obey Him (Heb. 5:9). If you are not willing to obey Jesus, then He cannot and will not forgive your sins. In such a case one remains separated from God. Just believing in Him is not enough. In James 2:19-20, we read that even some of the demons believe in God. These demons are not “saved” from sin just because they believe in the existence of God. Because they will not turn away from sin and work for the Lord they continue to be condemned by God. I want my family to know these things. The Bible is where they learn these things.
