How Can We Know?

How Can We Know?

By Greg King

Have you ever wondered about your relationship with God? Have you ever questioned whether or not your relationship with God is real? Is it right? Am I truly a child of God? How can I know for sure?

Did you know that the scripture says that, “The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God…”?(Rom. 8:16) Isn’t that amazing? Isn’t that comforting to know? Some will make this to be something mystical or magical when its not. The meaning is really quiet simple and it requires honesty on our part.

Two witnesses are involved here. Both bearing witness to the same fact: "we are children of God."

The Holy Spirit has given His testimony in revealing the commands of God and our spirits (our life) testifies that we have done those things. As a result, the two witnesses agree or bear witness together. 1 John 2:5says, “but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him:”.

One can know that he is a child of God when he has the testimony of both spirits.  The Holy Spirit revealing what one must do, and his own spirit revealing that he has done it.

The Holy Spirit has revealed the plan of salvation, and when our spirits testify that we have obeyed the plan, both spirits are testifying that we are children of God. Also, when the Spirit reveals the kind of character which constitutes a child of God and our spirits reveal that we have that kind of character, both bear witness that we are children of God. An honest self-examination will reveal the truth!
